Explore a thought-provoking exhibition from Deaf artists Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq, Trudi Collier and Vika Rudenko, each offering a unique perspective on identity, communication, psychology and lived experience.
At the heart of the exhibition is the question: how do we respond when we feel challenged, misunderstood or threatened? Do we confront misconceptions and push back against barriers, or do we instinctively retreat? Through painting, mixed media, sculpture and glass, the artists invite visitors to reflect on the psychological responses that shape our lives and the experiences of Deaf people.
Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq, an Art Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, and Trudi Collier, a Psychological Therapist, present work that encourages audiences to question their own reactions and engage with themes of resilience, perception and survival. Alongside them, internationally exhibited visual mixed-media artist Vika Rudenko presents work from her Unboxing Audism: Living Incognito series, developed through the Deaf Arts Academy in Canada. Inspired by Deaf View/Image Art (De’VIA), her work explores audism, identity and the lived experience of navigating the world as a Deaf person.
Together, the exhibition offers a powerful and visually engaging exploration of Deaf perspectives, inviting audiences to pause, reflect and experience contemporary Deaf art throughout the Edinburgh Deaf Festival.
